Since 1958, the World's Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up has been held annually on the 2nd weekend in March at the Nolan County Coliseum. It will be held in Sweetwater, Texas and sponsored by the Sweetwater Jaycees.
The Round-Up was started as a way to control the population of snakes in their area of Texas. The over- population of rattlesnakes was causing harm to the local farmers and ranchers who were losing their livestock to these natural predators. Today, it is an event that draws over 40,000 visitors per year.
Fried rattlesnake. The biggest Barbecue Cook-off ever seen, filling the air with that wonderful smell of barbecue so unique to Texas. But even with all the other things going on the rattlesnakes are the main attraction. Bus tours take people out on tours to let people get the feel of the Rattlesnake's habitat.
The fun starts on Thursday with the Rattlesnake Roundup Review Parade. The Miss Snakecharmer Pageant is on Thursday night. Come join the fun. For more information, contact the Jaycees @ 325-207-9730.
